Court blocks Narc Kenya action against Sonko

The High Court in Nairobi on Monday temporarily stopped Narc-Kenya from expelling Makadara MP Gidion Mbuvi.

The court also barred the Registrar of Political Parties and the Attorney General from effecting the expulsion until the hearing of all parties in the application.

The MP, who is also known as Mike Sonko, was expelled by his party for allegedly showing allegiance to a different party, but he challenged the decision in court.

He told the court that the decision to expel him was made without according him an opportunity to be heard.

High Court Judge David Majanja granted the injunction pending hearing of all parties on November 2.

Mr Mbuvi got into trouble with the party that sponsored him to Parliament after he allegedly campaigned for Party of National Unity (PNU) candidate – now MP – Yusuf Hassan, instead of campaigning for his party’s candidate, Mr Brian Weke, in the recent Kamukunji by-election.

The intention to expel him became clear in August when his party took him to task for supporting a rival party, a situation that also faced Juja MP William Kabogo. Both of them were facing accusations of campaigning for PNU.

And on October 18, Narc-Kenya party officials met and resolved to expel Mr Mbuvi from the party.

The MP, who defeated experienced politicians to capture the Makadara seat in a by-election, now wants the court to intervene and save him from the expulsion, which could make him lose his Parliamentary seat if the Speaker declares it vacant.
