Tobiko orders MP Waititu's arrest over hate speech

Embakasi MP Ferdinand Waititu should be prosecuted over hate speech and incitement to violence.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko ordered the police to arrest and bring to justice the Water assistant minister.

Mr Tobiko said the MP incited his constituents to violence and incited 'feelings of hatred and hostility against the Maasai community".

"This is therefore to advise that you (police) cause prompt action to be taken to ensure that all those found to have been involved including Hon Waititu are immediately apprehended and brought to justice," said the DPP in a statement Tuesday.

On Monday, two people were killed in a violent confrontation between street boys and watchmen in Kayole, Nairobi.

Trouble started when watchmen attacked and killed a street boy accused of stealing chicken in the estate.

Mr Waititu said: “From today, we do not want to see any members of this community here in Kayole.”

In his statement, Mr Tobiko said the Maasai guards and the street boys took the law into their hands to commit criminal acts and "must be punished"

"In addition, Hon Waititu should be held responsible for his utterances. He not only incited people to violence, but also incited feelings of hatred and hostility against the Maasai community."

Separately, Internal Security minister Katoo ole Metito said the government would take action.

"As a government, we shall not hesitate to take action against any persons who incites incites the public to violence, irrespective of their position or status in society," Mr ole Metito said during a news conference at Harambee House, Nairobi.

He condemned the killing of the two people and appealed to Kenyans to maintain peace and exercise restraint in the run up to the next polls.
