PM Odinga wants Kisumu security chiefs changed

Prime Minister Raila Odinga wants police chiefs in Kisumu reshuffled as per popular demand by residents.

Kisumu residents want a reshuffling of police to restore security in the city. The residents now want the town's former police chief Johnstone Wanyama be recalled.

PM Raila Odinga while addressing a Press conference in Kisumu said residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the current police leadership after experiencing cases of unsolved murders and robberies.

PM Odinga said the decision was arrived at during a meeting with top security officers.

However, he cautioned the residents that a single individual will not end the town's insecurity challenges.

He also directed the police to stop using excessive force against the public but resort to acceptable means of containing protesters.

“Police should desist from using live bullets on unarmed resident but should use rubber bullets and teargas to disperse demonstrators," PM Odinga said.

Three more people died of bullet wounds during the four days protests after residents demanded the transfer of senior security officers over alleged complicity with criminal gangs in the area.

Five of the six casualties admitted at the Oginga Odinga Memorial Hospital among them a standard seven pupil sustained gunshot wounds during the protests.
