Makueni senate by-election set to be held on July 22

The Makueni Senatorial by- election will be held on Monday July 22 .

The seat fell vacant following the death of Senator Mutula Kilonzo on the 27th of last month.

Among those expected in the race are former assistant minister Mr Gideon Ndambuki.

Mr Ndambuki lost the nominations for the Wiper Democratic Movement ticket to Mr Kilonzo in the March 4 election.

However, the main challenger in the election, former Transport assistant minister Harun Mwau, had filed a petition in court disputing the outcome of the election and it remains to be seen whether he will throw his hat in the ring again.

In his petition, Mr Mwau named Independent Eelectoral and Boundaries Commission as the first defendant and Mr Kilonzo as the second.

Mr Mutula died before the case was heard by the High Court.

Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro declared the seat vacant on May 13.

Yesterday, the electoral commssion communications manager, Ms Tabitha Mutemi, said that they would gazette a returning officer for the by-election.

The officer will be issued with a notice to conduct the election by the electoral Boundaries commission chairman Ahmed Issack Hassan.

Makueni County has six constituencies — Mbooni, Makueni, Kilome, Kaiti, Kibwezi East and Kibwezi West.
