The political tussle over the control of the civil service took a different turn on Thursday, with Meru MPs vowing to table a motion to censure Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The MPs told a news conference at Parliament Buildings they would file the motion to counter that of ODM censuring the Head of Public Service, Mr Francis Muthaura.
“We have many options; we’ll do that at the appropriate time,” said Mr Silas Ruteere Muriuki (Imenti North).
East Africa Community assistant minister Peter Munya termed ODM’s criticism on the relevance of Mr Muthaura’s office as “unwarranted, misdirected and uncalled for.”
“Instead of the PM addressing the food crisis, the plight of displaced people and the corruption in Government, he is busy hurling insults at a civil servant,” Mr Munya said.
Mr Muthaura comes from Meru and it is said that the MPs have been under pressure from their powerful council of elders, the Njuri Ncheke, to defend him.
“As Meru leaders, we cannot sit aside and see our people being attacked for doing their work,” Mr Muriuki said.
The statement was also signed by Kiraitu Murungi (South Imenti), Mr Kilemi Mwiria (Tigania West) and Ntoitha M’Mithiaru (Igembe North).
