There will be no more creation of districts due to financial implication, President Kibaki has declared.

Just a day after he defended the creation of the new administrative units, the President on Monday said it would have been prudent to create more to bring development closer to the people.

He, however, regretted this would now not be possible because of the heavy financial burden involved in running the districts.

The President, who wound up a visit to his Othaya constituency, once again defended the move, saying those opposed to the creation of such districts were backward.

Lean motorcade

“It is okay for those who do not want such development, but we will continue to develop the country,” the President said while addressing a crowd at the Mukurwe-ini shopping centre.

In Karatina, the President called on the residents to assist in running the new districts by chipping in financially.

The President’s lean motorcade then snaked its way through Mukurweini, where he was met by the local MP Kabando wa Kabando.

Mr Kabando enumerated the development projects being undertaken in the  new district and, as he concluded his speech, invited the President in mother tongue to greet his “in-laws” (First Lady Lucy Kibaki  comes from the area).

Kiswahili

However, when he took to the microphone, President Kibaki called  on the crowd to learn to communicate in Kiswahili  and cautioned the old that the young were already ahead of them because they knew how to communicate in the national language.

He called on a contractor building roads in the area to speed up the projects so that locals can start benefiting.

The President promised more development projects for the area, but asked the residents to aid the process by chipping in with their resources.

He said he was willing to preside over any fundraiser for such projects.
