The Simama Kenya Bungoma rally was cancelled because some groups were plotting to disrupt it, Western provincial police boss King’ori Mwangi confirmed to the Nation on Thursday.
“We have received intelligence reports that a group of people are planning to cause chaos,” said Mr Mwangi at a press briefing in his office.
He said police had received information that some leaders were inciting the public to disrupt the meeting, planned for Sunday at the Kanduyi Stadium.
The leaders, he said, wanted to take advantage of an incident in which a volunteer with the Kenya Red Cross Society was shot dead on Tuesday by police as he attended to victims of an accident involving a fuel tanker to raise public anger.
“We hope the organisers will cooperate to avert an unnecessary confrontation between anyone,” said Mr Mwangi.
