Cabinet nominees vetting starts Monday

The parliamentary committee tasked with vetting 16 nominees to the Cabinet is set to begin its work on Monday.

Clerk of the National Assembly Justin Bundi said on Sunday that Parliament had received some views from the public on the nominees.

“We expect to receive many more over the week, but when the committee meets at about 3pm or 4pm, it will determine what the next move will be,” Mr Bundi said.

Public hearings

The Committee on Appointment, which is chaired by the National Assembly Speaker, has set Thursday as the date of the start of the public vetting, which will be conducted at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi.

The date, however, coincides with Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo’s funeral in Mbooni.

This means most MPs and Senators might miss the hearings as they will be in Mbooni for the funeral.

“I think the two functions can go on, but it is upon the committee to make a determination. It is really the business of the committee, so when they meet on Monday, they’ll probably decide on that,” Mr Bundi said.

Nominees scheduled for vetting on Thursday are Anne Waiguru (Devolution & Planning), Raychelle Omamo (Defence), Amina Mohammed (Foreign Affairs), Jacob Kaimenyi (Education, Science and Technology) and Henry Rotich (National Treasury).

The public has until May 8 to submit their views on the nominees, and the committee can summon anyone it wishes to appear before it in person or submit additional information.

Like other instances where Parliament was responsible for the vetting, the hearings shall be open to the public unless the committee decides to hold part of the proceedings in camera.
