Central leaders unveil Raila campaign plan

A central Kenya political group has launched a campaign for Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s bid for the presidency.

Friends of Raila on Thursday vowed to market the PM to voters, including those in the Diaspora, in a campaign project dubbed Gikuyu for Raila (G4R 2012).

The group has come up with a list of 18 reasons why Kenyans should elect Mr Odinga for the top seat.

And on Thursday, they met the PM over lunch at Ranalo restaurant in Nairobi in what they said was meant to “seek his blessings” before they start marketing him.

ODM Central region representative Peter Kuguru, who is the leader of the campaign, said the group would seek support for the PM because his opponents had no vision.

“Raila is the only leader who dines with people because he wants to be with them. We will campaign for you because we know you are the best person to lead this country,” he said during the meeting.

They vowed to convince voters, especially in central Kenya, to vote for Mr Odinga in his “grand finale match to State House, 2012.”

The group said they had a vision to “demonstrate that the Gikuyu can promote harmony and integration of all communities living in Kenya.”

Among the reasons they put forward for fronting Mr Odinga is that they would want to thank him for supporting President Kibaki when he first vied in 2002 and for accepting “half-loaf” to become Prime Minister and hence saved the country from more bloodshed.

“As appreciation for the great gesture to elect our man to be the third President of Kenya, we the Agikuyu (Kikuyu) shall elect Raila to be the fourth President. We kindly request you to come along with us to celebrate with the PM,” they stated.
