Jubilee's Ekwee Ethuro sworn in as Senate Speaker

Former Turkana Central MP Ekwee Ethuro has been sworn in as Speaker of the Senate.

Mr Ethuro, with the backing of the Jubilee coalition, managed 38 votes against Cord's Farah Maalim's 29 votes.

The Clerk of the Senate Jeremiah Nyegenye declared Mr Ethuro as Speaker after the second round of voting.

Earlier, 67 Senators were sworn in.

These were 47 elected Senators and 20 nominated by political parties.

Nine members of Kenya's independence Senate witnessed the ceremony.

In the Deputy Speaker race, Murang'a Senator Kembi Gitura (Jubilee) emerged victorious with 38 votes against Vihiga Senator George Khaniri (UDF) who got 29 votes.
