One of the Ocampo Six has asked the International Criminal Court to finance his travel expenses ahead of his appearance next month.

Kass FM radio presenter Joshua arap Sang, through lawyers Kimutai Bosek and Katwa Kigen, wrote to The Hague court saying he could not afford the hefty travel fees.

“A return ticket alone costs about Sh120,000 per person and given that I will be travelling with two lawyers and including accommodation, I will require about Sh1 million, which I cannot afford,” Mr Sang said.

He was speaking on Wednesday after receiving summons to appear before the ICC on April 7. (READ: ICC forwards summonses)

He was served by deputy director of police reforms King’ori Mwangi.

Mr Sang is alongside five others named by ICC chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo as bearing the most responsibility for the 2007/2008 election violence.

Mr Sang claimed he had just cleared his college fees and could not even afford to cater for his own travel expenses.

“The only other option is to have my friends fund raise for me, but I hope the court will be able to facilitate my travel,” he said.

He said he was confident that the case against him would fail. “The case reads like a bunch of lies.”

The other suspects are public service head Francis Muthaura, Finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta, former ministers William Ruto and Henry Kosgey, and postmaster-general Hussein Ali.
