German leader jets in Tuesday

Chancellor Angela Merkel arrives in Kenya on Tuesday to spearhead Germany’s political and economic interests in the country and the region.

German ambassador to Kenya Margit Hellwig-Boette said Mrs Merkel would hold talks with the two principals and Speaker Kenneth Marende.

She will also hold a joint press conference with Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

She is to attend a State luncheon hosted by President Kibaki at State House, give a speech at University of Nairobi, visit International Livestock Research Institute and the United Nations Environmental Programme offices where she will have a roundtable discussion with experts.

A German firm is involved in construction of an energy efficient building at UNEP while some of its scientists are at ILRI which is described as a model of a state of the art research institution in Africa.

German universities also enjoy an exchange programme with UoN. Seventy-five Kenyan post-graduate students benefit from scholarships in Germany annually.

After the one-day visit, Mrs Merkel will depart for Luanda, Angola before proceeding to Nigeria.
