A new political movement plans to seek court orders blocking eight presidential hopefuls from running for office.

The G47 Movement said it is being driven by the strength of various reports on impropriety to block the politicians from running.

According to the group, which says it wants to provide alternative leadership, the hopefuls cannot pass the integrity test stipulated in Chapter Six of the Constitution.

It targets Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto, who are facing charges related to the 2008 election violence at the International Criminal Court, and six other politicians.

Someone without baggage

“These are individuals who have been adversely mentioned in various commission reports that raised issues on their integrity and we have to block them from ascending to power. We have to get someone without baggage to lead this country,” G47 governing council chairman Ken Wafula said.

Mr Wafula also revealed that a team was compiling a list of MPs who had not paid taxes, with the aim of blocking them from running.

“We will ensure that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is ordered by the courts to block these individuals if it does not do so on its own,” Mr Wafula said.
