Kalonzo: I didn’t seek Mutula’s sacking

Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka on Sunday dismissed media reports that he had written to President Kibaki seeking the sacking of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Mutula Kilonzo.

The reports published by a local daily indicated that Mr Musyoka had informed Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto that he had asked the President to sack Mr Kilonzo, when he met the two leaders on Friday evening.

But on Sunday Mr Musyoka posted on his Twitter and Facebook pages: “I would like to clarify that I have not written to the President in regard to Hon. Mutula Kilonzo, the story in sections of the press is propaganda.”

His spokesman Kaplich Barsito clarified that the VP consults face to face with the president and does not need to write.

“Whenever the VP wants to take action, he consults with the president as he frequently does and not necessarily write,” Mr Barsito said.

Mr Musyoka has been under pressure from his colleagues in the G7 Alliance to tame Mr Kilonzo who has insisted that Mr Kenyatta and Mr Ruto should abandon their presidential ambitions due to their ongoing cases at the International Criminal Court. (READ: Storm over Kalonzo: Why he's unwanted)

Their allies have in turn asked Mr Musyoka to deal with his Wiper Democratic Movement secretary-general or forget about the G7 alliance.

On Friday, the three politicians admitted that there were differences among them but said that they were working to iron them out.

It is here that Mr Musyoka is said to have written to the president but when asked about it journalists, the VP and his colleagues refused to respond.

On Sunday, the three kept a low profile after Mr Kenyatta and Mr Ruto campaigned in Nyandarua County on Saturday without the VP.

The VP met his advisers in Naivasha before flying the Machakos for a burial.
