ICC hearings whet appetite for justice

The recent confirmation hearings at the International Criminal Court for Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto seems to have boosted support for the process in their strongholds.

This is according to a new opinion poll released on Friday.

The opinion poll which was conducted by Ipsos-Synovate (formerly Steadman) last month showed that Central Province recorded a 22% increase in support for the ICC process, from 36 per cent in July to 58 per cent in October.

Rift Valley Province followed closely recording a 12 per cent increase from 37 per cent to 49 per cent over the same period.

Support for the ICC process continues to increase marginally in Nairobi from 65 per cent to 69 per cent and in Nyanza where it increased from 79 per cent to 86 per cent.

The overall national support for the ICC increased by three per cent from 56 per cent to 59 per cent.

“But this is still lower than the 68 per cent who supported the ICC process in October last year before the list of the Ocampo Six was unveiled,” said Ipsos-Synovate managing director Maggie Ireri who released the results.

Declining support

But support for the ICC process continues to decline in Eastern province from 50 per cent in July to 47 per cent in October.

“The declining trend was also recorded in Coast, North Eastern and Western provinces,” said Ms Ireri.

The poll reveals that more than three quarters (77 per cent) of those polled had keenly watched the live proceedings or followed media coverage of ICC hearings.
