IEBC names nominated MPs, senators

The electoral commission has finally gazetted the names of nominated members of parliament and the senate, paving way for the swearing-in ceremony to be held next week.
The names were sent to the Government Printer last evening and were immediately published to avert a looming crisis that would have jeopardised the swearing-in ceremony slated for March 28.
In a Special Gazette Notice dated March 20, the Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) said each candidate reflects the appropriate number of qualified candidates.
“It alternates between male and female candidates in priority in which they were listed... and allocated in proportion to the total number of seats won”, said IEBC chair Isaack Hassan in the notice.
President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta’s TNA and Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s ODM dominate in both Houses.
For the nominated MPs and Senators both Mr Kenyatta and Mr Odinga have nominated their relatives. Mr Kenyatta has nominated his cousin Beth Mugo while Mr Odinga has nominated his brother Dr Oburu Oginga.
Both parties got four slots in the Senate and three to the National Assembly. United Republican Party garnered three slots in the Senate and four in the National Assembly while Wiper Democratic Movement party had one candidate for Senate and another for the National Assembly.
Those nominated for Senate under TNA include journalist and peace champion Naisula Lesuuda, and party chairman John Sakaja in the National Assembly.
ODM nominated senators include Janet Ongera and Joy Gwendo; and in the National Assembly Isaac Mwaura and Zulekha Juma.
URP nominated MPs include Sunjeev Birdi. Mrs Zipporah Kittony also makes a comeback on the Kanu list.
VP Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Democratic Movement has 25 MPs and Ford-Kenya 10 and Chama cha Uzalendo two.
