A section of leaders in Kisii County on Sunday pledged to support Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s quest for the presidency, even as Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka expressed confidence that the G7 alliance was intact.

During a church service, politicians and clergy said Mr Odinga had demonstrated commitment to the implementation of the new Constitution.

They hit out at those who opposed the passage of the Constitution last year but are now masquerading as reformers out to lead the country.

At Gekano Catholic Parish in Nyamira County, Cabinet ministers Chris Obure, William Ole Ntimama and six MPs cautioned Kenyans against falling prey to machinations from politicians who lacked principles and only pretended to embrace an idea when it suited them.

In his address, the PM criticised the Kenya National Union of Teachers and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Teachers for agitating for better salaries for their members without addressing the poor education standards. (READ: PM Odinga faults teachers union officials)

Mr Odinga emphasised that the unions should also direct their energies to the improvement of education standards. He cited some schools in Kisii and Nyamira counties as those that need urgent resuscitation.

Separately, Mr Musyoka dispelled claims that members of the G7 alliance lacked cohesion. “There is no mistrust. We are going to work as a team. We shall ensure that Kenya remains stable and united,” he said.

The Vice-President was speaking during a fund raiser for the construction of International Evangelism Church in Kitui County.

The alliance brings together Mr Musyoka, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Eldoret North MP William Ruto and Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa.

Mr Musyoka said that contrary to “media claims of disunity”, the alliance would hold. He urged Kenyans to remain united and work together for the benefit of all irrespective of their background.
