MPs on Thursday evening unanimously approved names of proposed commissioners who will steer the country through next year’s General Election.

The House approved the report of the Constitutional Oversight Implementation Commission which vetted the eight nominees. (IEBC nominees face Parliament)

The committee noted that the nominees were qualified and fulfilled the constitutional requirement.

CIOC chairman Abdikadir Mohamed while initiating debate said: “This commission is a reflection of the implementation of the Constitution.”

Deadline concerns

Supporting the nominations, assistant minister Mwangi Kiunjuri complained of the tendency of rushing names to Parliament at the last minute for approval, saying that denied MPs the opportunity to raise an objection because of deadline concerns.

The MPs asked the commission to ensure the next elections are smooth and fair to avoid a repeat of 2007 elections.

The nominees are Ms Muthoni Wangai, Ms Lillian Mahiri-Zaja, Mr Albert Bwire, Ms Kule Glama Godana and Mr Yusuf Nzibo, Mr Mohamed Alawi, Thomas Letangule, and Mr Abdullahi Sharawe.
