Michuki to be buried on Tuesday

Preparations for the burial of the Environment Minister John Michuki got underway on Thursday as tributes continued to flow in following his death. (See in pictures: John Michuki)

A team led by Provincial Commissioner Japhter Rugut met members of the minister’s family represented by his son Francis Michuki and step-brother Dr Stanley Michuki at his Kangema rural home to make burial plans.

The team visited the site where Mr Michuki, who died on Tuesday night, will be laid to rest a week later, and the General Kago Stadium in the town where a funeral Mass will be held before the burial.

Paid his respects

The PC said the minister will be given a state funeral which President Kibaki will attend.

In Nairobi, Prime Minister Raila Odinga paid his respects at Michuki’s residence at Ridgeways off Kiambu road. He said he would plant a tree. (READ: Death great loss to Kenya, say leaders)

Former Minister Simeon Nyachae and former Kanu nominated MP Ezekiel Barngetuny also visited the home to condole with the family.

Separately, deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi and Planning assistant minister Peter Kenneth mourned Mr Michuki, describing him as a leader who was an example to others.

In a statement from the US where he is marketing his presidential bid, Mr Kenneth who together with Mr Michuki hail from Murang’a county said the late minister will be remembered as an effective, forthright and focused leader.
