Moi name causes stir in House

He might be a decade into his retirement, but the mention of former President Daniel Moi on Tuesday caused a furore in Parliament as MPs debated a motion urging the government to put a stop to payments for Goldenberg-type schemes.

The motion by Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi attracted attention after he claimed Mr Moi was given Sh41 million by the owners of World Duty Free, one of the companies at the centre of the Goldenberg scandal.

Given due respect

The MP was cut short as he traced the history of the 1990s scandal, which cost taxpayers about Sh5.8 billion.

Ms Grace Kipchoim (Baringo South, URP) was first to question the reference to Mr Moi, saying he was not in the House and could not defend himself.

When Mr Wandayi persisted, he was cautioned by Deputy Speaker Joyce Laboso, who was backed by Adan Keynan (Eldas, ODM).

“Mzee Moi is a retired statesman and he must be given the due respect he deserves in this House,” Mr Keynan told the House.
