Kilome MP John Harun Mwau’s vehicle knocked down a pedestrian and killed him on the spot near the Serena Hotel, Nairobi Thursday morning.

Kilimani Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Bernard Muli said that the MP was driving himself from the town centre before hitting the middle-aged man who was said to have been speaking on his mobile phone while crossing the road.

According Mr Muli, the man could have succumbed to serious head injuries after falling on the pavement after the accident.

“The incident was reported at around 6.00am and information we got from witnesses was that the man was speaking on his cell phone as he attempted to cross the road,” said Mr Muli.

Although he confirmed that police had gathered some information concerning the accident from Mr Mwau, the OCPD said he was yet to record a statement since he was still recovering from shock.

The man’s identity could not be immediately established since no identification documents were found on him, and neither did the police find the phone he was said to have been using just before the accident occurred.

Efforts by the Nation to trace the private car that the MP was driving at the time of accident were fruitless since inspection officers at the Nairobi Area traffic branch said they had released the vehicle after completing inspection.

An inspection officer at the branch disclosed that the car was taken for inspection at around 9.30a.m and released immediately thereafter.

The incident comes a day after Parliament began debate on the Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2012 which seeks to impose life imprisonment for any motorist who causes death by reckless driving.

It proposes that drivers who violate speed limits be jailed for three months or fined Sh20,000 or both.
