A househelp who had admitted threatening to kill Education minister Mutula Kilonzo has changed her plea.

Ms Irine Nduku Kasilu, 25, was supposed to be sentenced on her own plea of guilty but before the magistrate could pass judgment, she requested the charge to be read again after which she denied sending a threatening message to Mr Kilonzo.

The Education minister is now expected to take the witness box when the case comes up for hearing on October 15.

Ms Kasilu last month admitted threatening, in a text message, to kill the minister and harm his family.

The court was only awaiting a probation report before passing the sentence.

The alleged message read: “Minister Mutula be ready to die, we were sent by our boss Boniface Nthiani Mutwiwa phone number 0737051194 or 0728511670 to come to your place in Runda this weekend and rape your wife and your daughter and shoot you to death.”

It further read: “He is our boss so we have to follow his instructions. He works as a caretaker in State House Road near Belle-Vue gardens.”

Ms Kasilu’s message also implicated her “boss” in the alleged abduction of Imenti Central MP Gitobu Imanyara on State House Road, the blast at Assanand’s Building on Moi Avenue, the grenade attack on a church in Ngara and several explosions in Mombasa.

It also said the “boss” has connections with Al-Shabaab.

“He is the one who sent us to threaten Gitobu Imanyara and shoot a police officer in Kiambu. He is connected with the recent explosions and has connections with Al-Shabaab. He is our boss; his name is Boniface Nthiani so Mutula be ready to die this weekend. We will even explode (sic) your house in Runda,” read the message.

When she first appeared in court, Ms Kasilu admitted everything.

According to the probation report, Ms Kasilu is an orphan who lost her father while she was young and did not go beyond Class Eight.

She allegedly scored 457 marks in the 2000 KCPE examination but could not proceed to secondary school due to lack of fees.

She told probation officers that a friend used her phone to send the messages to Mr Kilonzo, adding that she did not know the minister’s number and had never met him.

Mr Kilonzo, in his report to the police, said he is apprehensive and feels the accused could be a danger to society because the messages are related to activities linked to terrorism.

He said the accused used different lines to threaten him and his family, adding that if she was truthful, there could be more to the case.

Senior principal magistrate Lucy Nyambura released Ms Kasilu on a cash bail of Sh300,000 and surety in the same amount.

The hearing is scheduled for October 15.
