Police block Limuru meeting

Police have sealed off the venue of a meeting scheduled to take place in Limuru Wednesday.

The organisers of the meeting, dubbed "Limuru 2B", say it is aimed at bringing together Kenyans from all regions to champion non-tribal alliances ahead of the General Election.

Police erected roadblocks at three major entry points to the Jumuia Conference Centre, Limuru early Wednesday and a combined force of regular and Administration Police (AP) deployed.

"We will not allow anyone to the venue," Lari OCPD Joshua Opiyo said.

Police had cancelled the meeting saying they had received information that youths had planned to cause chaos.

The meeting was called to counter recent gatherings by Gema and Kamatusa held by supporters of Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto respectively.

On Tuesday, former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga said the group would defy the police order and go ahead with the event.

“We shall go there. Let the police tell us about the ban face-to-face,” said Mr Njenga in a statement.

Mr Njenga was ordered to leave the Wida Highway Motel and escorted back to Nairobi. He was warned not to set foot in Kiambu County. However, youths had started trooping to Limuru for the meeting in a show of defiance.

Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi, a convenor of the meeting, said leaders from across the political divide were set to attend the Limuru meeting.
