Politicians behind chaos in Mathare, claims Karua

Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua on Sunday said the wave of violence that had hit the Mathare slum in Nairobi was politically instigated.

She accused some presidential hopefuls of being behind the violence that has left one person dead and a trail of destruction of property.

“Politicians who are seeking the presidency are the ones who are fanning violence and should be investigated,” she told journalists at the Philadelphia Retreat and Conference Centre in Kirinyaga County.

“When you listen to the murmurs doing rounds, the aspirants are deeply involved in these chaos,” she said adding that such people had no business seeking elective posts.

Ms Karua said the violence demonstrated the high level of impunity and told Kenyans to be careful when electing leaders next year.

The presidential aspirant added that although President Kibaki’s 10-year rule had given Kenyans confidence that all was well, impunity had risen to levels never witnessed even during the Moi era.

“People get killed and property destroyed and the same thing is constantly repeated. This is impunity of the highest order. Even during the Kanu regime it was not like this,” she said.

She observed that corruption was deeply rooted in all sectors of the economy yet the coalition government seemed not to care much about it.

“When scandals are unearthed, they are not dealt with decisively ,” she said. The Gichugu MP announced that her party will hold its National Executive Council meeting on January, 8 to endorse the flag bearer.
