Poll: Kenyans decry high cost of living

Most Kenyans are concerned with the high cost of living, corruption and rising unemployment, a poll released on Friday reveals.

Kenyans are also bothered with negative ethnicity, political wrangles and the slow pace of the implementation of the Constitution, according to the Infotrak Research and Consulting poll.

The poll was conducted between October 19 and November 1. The survey was conducted in 24 counties with 1,500 respondents.

However, 45 per cent, with most being the youth believe the country is in the right path.

“It is mainly the youth (18-35 years) who feel that the country is moving in the right direction,” said Infotrak Executive Director Angela Ambitho.

Those who said the country was headed in the right direction cited new policies and implementation of the Constitution (37%), the vetting of judges (26%), peace and reconciliation efforts (24%).

The survey also noted that Prime Minister Raila Odinga is still the most popular presidential aspirants scoring 35 per cent ahead of his close rival Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta who scores 24 per cent.

Eldoret North MP William Ruto emerged third with 10.3 per cent, while Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi came a close fourth with 10 per cent.

Others were Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka (8.8%), Martha Karua (4.3%) and Peter Kenneth (2%).
“This means that Musalia Mudavadi and Uhuru Kenyatta were the biggest gainers since February with seven and six per cent respectively,” said Ms Ambitho.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) was also ranked the most popular party scoring 39 per cent. The National Alliance party (TNA) scored 25 per cent.
