Uasin Gishu

Eldoret North MP William Ruto on Sunday dismissed calls to scrap the Senate.

Mr Ruto said Kenyans would not accept unnecessary constitutional amendments that go against the spirit of devolution.

“The Senate will not be removed. Those who think they will succeed are daydreaming,” said the former Cabinet minister.

He was speaking in the constituency, during the commissioning of a rural electrification project.

Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni has proposed amendments to the Constitution to remove the Senate from the county government.

Mr Ruto said through devolution the economy at county level will be expanded and help in poverty alleviation.

At the same time, UDM secretary-general Martin ole Kamwaro on Sunday asked Chepalungu MP Isaac Ruto to keep off Narok County politics.

Party wrangles

The communities living in the county, he said, were intelligent and mature enough to manage their own affairs without outside influence.

Mr Kamwaro accused the Chepalungu MP of lining up his political cronies to run in the next elections on the party ticket.

Several calls to Mr Ruto for comment went unanswered.
