Nominated MP Sheikh Mohammad Dor was on Wednesday arrested in Nairobi over remarks he made last week on alleged funding of MRC by Coast politicians.

His arrest comes days after the Police were ordered to crackdown on politicians, religious leaders and persons supporting Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) within the Coast region.

Internal Security PS Mutea Iringo said that the crackdown will continue until normalcy is restored.

He also warned that anybody responsible for heinous crimes in the Coast region will be dealt with irrespective of his position in the society. (READ: Police in Coast begin crackdown on gangs)

Last Friday, director of the Criminal Investigation Department had indicated that security agencies are investigating politicians and businessmen in connection with the violent gangs causing mayhem in Coast Province. (READ: Police probe tycoons linked to Coast gangs)

Mr Muhoro said detectives tracking down members of secessionist MRC were also looking for former soldiers and policemen linked to the clashes that have left more than 100 people dead in the last one month.

Mr Muhoro said the politicians and businessmen were suspected of funding the gangs, while the security officers were said to be training the militias.
