Spy chief Michael Gichangi failed to appear before parliamentary committee on Finance, which had summoned him to give evidence over the closed Charterhouse Bank saga.

The MPs had on Tuesday morning gathered at an office in Continental Buildings to hear Mr Gichangi’s evidence in the ongoing hearings.

The meeting was to be held behind closed doors.

However, the National Security Intelligence Service boss did not show up.

An MP in the committee later explained that the absence was due to a breakdown in communication.

“We were informed that Mr Gichangi thought he was scheduled to appear before us on Friday,’’ he said.

The lawmaker said that the summons would be rescheduled.

The committee is expected to meet former Central Bank governor Andrew Mullei on Friday.

The committee, chaired by Nambale MP Chris Okemo, is investigating the circumstances that led to the closure of the bank and why it remains closed four years after it was placed under statutory management.

Who are the other MPs and how qualified are they to deal with such a crime?

the hearing concerns issues of great interest to the public: tax evasion, money laundering and grand fraud. y shud it be held behind closed doors. in USA, the CIA boss is grilled in public. when govt officials know that they will be held accountable in public, they will do their work diligently.
