Support for ICC trials high: poll

Most Kenyans favour the International Criminal Court (ICC) trials but in an ironic twist, would vote for candidates facing crimes against humanity charges at the same court.
This is according to an opinion poll by Gallup whose results were published by The Economist, an authoritative world affairs magazine.
The survey also revealed that Kenyans voters would also vote for the candidate who would save the four from the trials during the March 2013 General Election.
According to polls, seven out of ten Kenyans support the ICC trials set to start in March next year.
Raila leads
The Gallup poll also found out that Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto, who are set to appear in the dock at The Hague-based court next year over the post-election violence, came second and third favourites respectively in the race for the presidency next year.
The other two suspects are former Head of Public Service Francis Muthaura and radio presenter Joshua Sang.
Mr Kenyatta and Mr Ruto’s supporters want the ICC cases to be transferred from the Netherlands to local courts.
However, 91 per cent of those polled do not want the cases held anywhere in Africa and want the ICC to proceed with the trials.
Despite the huge support for ICC trials, the prospect does not seem to affect the choice of who becomes Kenya’s fourth president.
The polls put Prime Minister Raila Odinga as the favourite among voters to win the presidency with 29 per cent of those polled supporting him.
Mr Kenyatta and Mr Ruto attracted 15 per cent and 12 per cent of the vote respectively.
