The Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko has directed the police to charge Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo after investigations revealed he made false claims on threats to Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s life.

Mr Tobiko said he was satisfied with the investigation and that the joint Government Chief Whip should be charged with giving police false information.

The DPP's move comes just a day after Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere said his officers had completed the probe and forwarded the file to Mr Tobiko's office.

During a funeral two weeks ago, Mr Midiwo sensationally claimed that there was a plot to eliminate Mr Odinga and said he was ready to give evidence to police.

He alleged that mercenaries had been hired to execute the plot adding that senior government officials he did not name were in the loop and asked Foreign Affairs minister Sam Ongeri to investigate the alleged involvement of foreign individuals in the plot.

He spoke in the presence of the PM and Cabinet ministers Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o (Medical Services), Dalmas Otieno (Public Service) and James Orengo (Lands) during the burial of Dr Leah Gondi in Bondo District.

Following, Mr Midiwo claims, police launched investigations and questioned the Gem MP. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) also questioned Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto over the assassination claims.

Finance minister Njeru Githae and Prof Ongeri also had their statements taken by officers investigating the matter.

Mr Midiwo is in Pretoria, South Africa on parliamentary business.
