UK diplomat in Kenya over 'leaked' ICC dossier

United Kingdom’s Minister in charge of Africa and Overseas Territories Henry Bellingham is in Kenya amid a diplomatic tiff following claims that his government is seeking to have President Kibaki indicted over the 2007/8 post-election violence when he leaves office.

The claims, made in Kenya's Parliament by MPs Charles Kilonzo and Aden Duale, revolve around an alleged leaked dossier that outlines UK's intentions to have the ICC indict the President and detain Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto, who face charges of crime against humanity.

The leaked documents also accused UK of propping up Prime Minister Raila Odinga's presidential ambitions.

The UK, through its Mission in Nairobi, has since dismissed the accusations as "a smear campaign". (READ: UK denies Kibaki ICC plot)

Ambassador Bellingham met with Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetangula on Monday. The two are scheduled to hold a joint press briefing.

Parliament's Departmental Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations is currently probing the matter and is scheduled to hear from director of the National Security Intelligence Services (NSIS) Michael Gichangi, Commissioner of Police Mathew Iteere and CID director Ndegwa Muhoro. The team is also expected to meet MPs Charles Kilonzo and Aden Duale who tabled the document in Parliament. Mr Kilonzo is also a member of the same committee.
