Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday launched a campaign to seek support for a presidential bid in 2012.

Mr Kenyatta’s first stop was in Nakuru County where he met Kikuyu leaders in Rift Valley.

The meeting, which was closed to the media, was attended by the six MPs in the region, Lee Kinyanjui (Nakuru Town), John Mututho (Naivasha), Mwangi Kiunjuri (Laikipia East), Nderitu Mureithi (Laikipia West), Joseph Kiuna (Molo) and Nelson Gaichuhie (Subukia).

A source at the meeting said the talks were about the community’s plan ahead of 2012.

“We resolved to front Mr Kenyatta as our spokesman and Presidential candidate in next year’s general election,” the source said.

The fate of people uprooted from their homes in the 2007 violence was also discussed.

Mr Kenyatta, who is also Finance minister, said Sh80 million had been released for the families’ resettlement.

He said it has long to resettle the families because of theft of funds by some officials.
