Presidential hopefuls in the G7 alliance are ready to sacrifice their ambitions to field a single candidate in next year’s elections, Eldoret North MP William Ruto has said.

Mr Ruto told the Nation that they were determined to go to the 2007 general election united.

The Eldoret North MP said despite the supremacy battles and mutual suspicions within the alliance over the presidential flag-bearer, he is convinced the unity will last. (READ: Suspicions mar G7 unity bid)

Presidential aspirants in the alliance include Mr Ruto, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka and Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa.

He drew lessons from the pre-2002 political pact between President Kibaki, the late Michael Wamalwa, Charity Ngilu, Raila Odinga, George Saitoti and Mr Musyoka which prevailed because of their personal sacrifices.

“The G7 is formulated along the same lines as the Narc Summit and the ODM Pentagon. Who knew that Kibaki, Wamalwa, Raila, Saitoti and Ngilu would stay together?

“Who knew that ODM would go all the way? Sacrifices are possible. It is only a fool who thinks that there will be five presidents,” he states.

He dismissed arguments that the alliance is driven by a common hatred for Mr Odinga rather than sound policies to take the country forward

“The theory that what brings us together is our common hatred for Mr Odinga is peddled by people who look at politics negatively.

“They are the people who say Narc was put together because of common hatred for Moi and ODM was put together because of a hatred for Kibaki,” he argued.

On his own presidential campaign, Mr Ruto said he was targeting over thirty counties in six provinces to seal victory during the 2012 polls.
