Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka on Sunday called on Kenyans to gauge leaders seeking elective positions with a view of electing the right people in the forthcoming polls.

Mr Musyoka was addressing the press after attending a Sunday mass at the Nairobi Chapel.

The service was also attended by Prime Minister Raila Odinga, his wife Ida Odinga and Ministers Moses Wetangula (Trade), Musa Sirma (East African) and Dalmas Otieno (Public service).

In a rejoinder, PM Odinga said Kenyans should engage in mature, issue-based politics in the run-up to the General Election to avoid actions that might arouse ethnic tensions likely to spark violence as witnessed in 2008.

He emphasised on the need for Kenyans to engage in peaceful campaigns and avoid engaging in activities which may disrupt their peaceful coexistence.

“As we move towards the general elections, we must do everything possible to avoid politics of hostile ethnic polarisation that lead to clashes similar to what the country witnessed in the previous election,” he said

Mr Odinga urged Kenyans to remain united and campaign peacefully ahead of the forthcoming election.

“We have learnt a lesson on what happened during the last election and never again should our nation experience such," added Mr Odinga.

Mr Musyoka also cautioned motorists against breaking traffic rules and instead ensure sanity is observed on the roads.

Mr Musyoka asked motorists to develop a sense of responsibility while using the roads as there cannot be traffic policemen in all junctions.

“We must as Kenyans develop a sense of personal responsibility and observe order on our roads especially now that many of us are travelling upcountry for the Christmas holiday,’’ said Mr Musyoka.

Mr Wetangula on his part, emphasised on the need for Kenyans and motorists to be vigilant and observe traffic rules during this festive season.

The Cord leaders also wished Kenyans a merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2013.
