Voters’ register hits 8m mark

Close to eight million people had registered as voters on Tuesday evening with one week to go.

The Interim Independent Electoral Commission announced that it had by Monday registered 7,917,716 voters, representing 55 per cent of those enrolled ahead of the 2007 Genera Elections.

The electoral commission has urged Kenyans to pick their identity cards from their chiefs and register at the most convenient place for the referendum.

The electoral agency has advised that voters can transfer to the stations they want to vote in during the 2012 elections after the vote on the proposed constitution.

The latest information shows that Wajir Mandera region has enrolled 100,203 voters while Garrissa Ijara now has 45,436.

In Eastern Province, Upper Eastern has enrolled 81,296, Lower Eastern 672,269 while Central Eastern has registered 749,309 voters.

In the Rift Valley, South Rift has registered 573,966, Central Rift 639,113 while North Rift has 761,823 voters.

The Central region (Thika) has registered 749,309 voters while the Nyeri region has 537,854 voters.

The Nyanza Central region has 589,755 while Nyanza South has enrolled 579,635.

In Western Province, Kakamega has 503,742 voters while Bungoma has registered 393,685.

At the Coast, South West Coast (Mombasa) has registered 284,618 voters while the Upper Coast (Malindi) has 130,113 voters.

The information also shows that 676,302 voters have registered in Nairobi.
