Police shot dead three robbery suspects in separate incidents in Nairobi.

One of the suspects, shot on River Road at the Old Nation roundabout at noon Sunday, was described by police as a notorious mugger being sought in connection with a number of robberies along the road. A toy pistol was found on him.

Before the shooting, the officers said they had spotted the suspect with his two accomplices.

However, the others mingled with the crowds and managed to escape.

Two other suspected gangsters were shot dead at Kanisani in Kayole at around 8.30 pm. A home-made firearm was found on one of them.

Police had rushed to the scene in response to a distress call by a man who had fallen victim to the gang.

According to residents who witnessed the shootout, the suspects fired at a police vehicle when they realised that they were being trailed.

The officers fired back, killing all four. Three AK47 rifles and a pistol were recovered.

Thika OCPD  Mr Mwatio Nyambo, said the four had hijacked the car on Friday from Capwel Industries in Thika.

He said police had been trailing the suspects  after a tip-off from the public.

Mr Nyambo said the men had been part of a gang that has been terroising residents in the area.

“The four were trailed by police officers after a tip-off from public who saw the suspects in a suspicious car,” he said.

“We will sleep easier tonight but we suspect that most of  the members are stll at large”  said Mr Kuko Serser, a local resident who has fallen victim to the gang several times.
