A senior Administration Police officer was shot dead in Mumias District by gangsters at the weekend.

The incident occurred outside a bar that the criminals, who were posing as police officers, had raided at Mayoni trading centre, about four kilometres from Mumias Town.

Butere-Mumias deputy police boss Jackson Muthengi said the victim, senior sergeant Kiplimo Kandie, and two other officers had dashed to Green View Bar after they were informed about the raid.

After a shootout with the armed gangsters, Mr Kandie’s juniors discovered his body lying in a pool of blood about 50 metres away.

By the time they discovered the body, the two gangsters, who were wearing police jungle jackets and armed with a G3 rifle, had vanished.

Elsewhere, a taxi driver narrowly escaped death when police officers gunned down three suspected gangsters who had hired his car early on Sunday in Mombasa.

The suspected criminals were intercepted by police officers at a petrol station in Bamburi on their way to Mishomoroni before they were gunned down as they tried to escape.

Mombasa police boss Patrick Wafula said one of the suspects escaped. Mr Wafula said they recovered a pistol and five rounds of ammunition during the 3am incident.

He said earlier the gang harassed Kisauni residents, demanding money, before leaving for Bamburi.

In another case, a lorry driver was on Sunday shot dead by highway robbers at Kamatira Forest  on the Lodwar-Kapenguria road.

Sharp bend

The district police boss David Wambua said seven bandits armed with AK-47 rifles waylaid the vehicle on a sharp bend on Friday evening and shot the driver, an employee of Khetia’s Supermarket in Kitale township.

A suspected robber was on Sunday killed and his accomplice seriously injured by residents of an Eldoret estate. The man was hacked to death after he was found vandalising telephone wires at Langas estate.
