Former MP Raphael Wanjala may get temporary reprieve today after the court in New Delhi, India, ruled to grant him and his girlfriend Joyce Akinyi bail on Saturday.

But the bail will only take effect if they raise the Sh1.3 million set by the court.

Mr Wanjala and Ms Akinyi, who is at the centre of a property wrangle and divorce with her Nigerian husband Antony Chinedu, have been held at Tihar Prison, the second largest jail in India, for 19 days.

They were arrested at New Delhi Airport with Sh7.59 million in US dollars, which they did not declare on arrival in India, as the country’s law requires.

Declaration

Cash worth more than US $5,000 (Sh375,000) has to be declared at the airport and a currency declaration certificate obtained.

On Sunday, the Kenya high commissioner to New Delhi, Mr Festus Kaberia confirmed that the couple had been granted bail, which should be deposited in the court before the two are allowed to walk free as they await hearing of the case facing them.

According to Mr Kaberia, what was standing in the way was getting an Indian national as a surety for them.
