Muite rejects calls for AG’s sacking

Reforming the president’s powers is the key to stability and progress in the country, former MP Paul Muite said on Monday.
Mr Muite who is also a lawyer, said it was cowardly for Parliament to target Attorney General Amos Wako whom they accuse of being incompetent and standing in the way of reforms.
According to him, the real problem was the presidency but not in the AG who was just a presidential appointee.
Last week, some MPs said they would push for Mr Wako to be sacked, accusing him of frustrating the war on corruption.
“MPs are missing the point when they target the AG instead of the appointing authority which is messing up the country by giving jobs to incompetent personalities,” Mr Muite said.
Speaking on Sunday during a funds drive in aid of Mutira Anglican Church in Kirinyaga Central district, Mr Muite said the President holds immense powers of appointing individuals who serve his own interests but not those of the public.
Such powers should be trimmed so that no single person could appoint an AG or heads of other key institutions.
Mr Muite said Mr Wako did a good job of serving the retired president Moi and looking after the interests of the incumbent as Kenyans continue suffering.
He said reforms were crucial in addressing the problems, such as corruption and extra-judicial killings.
Unless reforms were instituted, Kenya would go the same path as Somalia, Mr Muite warned.
Donor countries
He predicted worse violence in the next elections if the necessary reforms will not have been put in place.
The country he said was paying Sh1.2 trillion in debt as a result of corruption.
“Kenya obtained loans from donor countries but unfortunately construction of the railway lines never kicked off,” he said without elaborating when the money was borrowed.
At the same time, university don Dr Julius Gathogo accused the government of failing to honour those who fought for the second liberation.
“It is sad that the government has not recognised those fought bravely for the second liberation,” he said.
