Women issue ‘strip warning’ over drugs

A section of Coast women leaders has threatened to strip publicly in a week if the government does not arrest drug barons.
The notice was issued in the presence of Coast Provincial Commissioner Ernest Munyi at Majengo Hall in Mvita.
The women were protesting against the increase in drug peddling and usage by their youth. They claimed that the drug sellers were known to the authorities yet no action was being taken against them. It’s as if the drug lords were above the law, said the women.
“For issuing this protest against the drug barons, our lives are in danger but we have decided to take action to save our children from drug abuse,” said Mrs Amina Abdalla, an ODM-K politician.
Mr Munyi said that while the war on the drug traders would be stepped up, the youths should avoid drugs.
One of the women, Mama Kuku Kali, claimed that magistrates who took interest in prosecuting drug peddlers were usually transferred.
“The government has not done enough to curb the peddling of drugs, but the responsibility falls on the society as well,” Mr Munyi pointed out.
Mrs Amina Zuberi, another leader, said those who traded in the drugs were the ones who should be arrested not just the youth who used them.
The group told the PC that if the government did not take action on the drug lords, then women would take to the streets and strip to demonstrate how serious they took the issue.
