I’ll soldier on, anti-narcotics activist vows

An anti-drug activist, who was burnt with acid in Mombasa a fortnight ago, has vowed to continue fighting drug trafficking at the Coast.

Ms Farida Rashid, who was scalded with acid in the right eye, at the same time called on the police to take action against those who threaten anti-drugs campaigners.

She said apart from seeking justice, she would not relent in fighting the evil that has destroyed lives of thousands of youth in the region.

“It is a pity that those who scalded my face are known, but until today, no action has been taken. We have seen different police officers but no arrest has been made despite giving them the names,” Ms Rashid said in Mombasa on Thursday.

Instilled fear

She said the attack has instilled fear among most anti-drug activists.

The acid attack occurred two weeks ago as Ms Rashid and other women leaders left the venue of a meeting they had attended with Prime Minister Raila Odinga during his tour of the region.

Kisauni deputy police boss Thomas Sangut said the matter was being handled by the Kisauni District Criminal Investigations Officer.

However, the officer could not be immediately reached to confirm whether or not anyone had been arrested.

Last year, an anti-drugs campaigner in Lamu, Mr Omar Bagdam, was also scalded with acid in the face.
