A love affair turned tragic when a 25-year-old carpenter set himself ablaze and, in the process, burnt 150 shanties.

As a result, 600 families were left homeless at KCC Estate in the outskirts of Naivasha Town on Thursday.

The man had been living with his lover for months and when the woman decided to end the relationship, he decided to commit suicide.

He went back to his one-room timber structure, where he doused himself in paraffin and struck a match.

The fire quickly spread to adjacent houses, said Mr Francis Mtunde, a landlord who lost 30 shanties in the fire.

The jilted lover was from Kimilili in Western Province and had lived in Naivasha since 2003.

His burnt body was taken to Naivasha District Hospital mortuary.
