A woman has been jailed for four years for killing her baby because she was an albino.
The accused, Ms Sara Kemunto Nyabuto, 23, committed the offence on August 2 this year at Bokimweri in Nyamache District.
Villagers retrieved the baby’s body from a river and upon investigations, it was confirmed that it belonged to the woman’s new-born daughter.
An autopsy at the Akemo Valley Hospital revealed the cause of death as suffocation.
The accused was arrested and held at Ogembo police station before she was charged with unlawfully and wilfully killing her baby girl, Esther Moraa, aged four months.
She admitted the facts and was convicted on her own plea of guilty. The court also heard that the accused killed the baby because she was not sired by her current husband.
Ogembo resident magistrate Richard Koech said a pre-sentence report indicated that the accused killed her child for being an albino.
The report further revealed that the accused claimed her husband had convinced her to kill the baby since she was born with albinism and was a bad omen and a disgrace to the family.
Her husband went into hiding after the body was found. But, police said that they are on his trail.
The magistrate said that even though probation officers had recommended a non-custodial sentence, the offence called for a jail sentence.
Ms Nyabuto was given 14 days to appeal.
