Industry analysts say oil search in Turkana is promising.

Oil explorers are back in Turkana County, with two firms showing interest in drilling wells in the Kerio Valley Basin.

Africa Oil and Tallow will carry out exploratory surveys on the possibility of drilling a well at Kalabata basin, according to Turkana South district commissioner Joseph Kanyiri.

Wells could also be drilled at Kochodin location in Turkana East District and parts of Kerio division in Turkana Central.

No cause for alarm

“The oil firms will do exploration surveys to determine if the area has enough deposits of oil or gas,” said Mr Kanyiri.

The oil companies are expected to drill the wells by September after analysing seismic data from the area.

“Locals have been made aware of the benefits of exploring for oil and there should be no cause for alarm,” said Mr Kanyiri.

He said the oil companies were engaging local leaders to ensure that safety mechanisms were in place before the wells were sank.

“More than 100 youths are set to get jobs if oil or gas are discovered in the area,” said Mr Kanyiri.
