JERUSALEM, Monday

Israel’s parliamentary finance committee today unanimously approved a plan to temporarily lower the salary of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and cabinet ministers by 5 percent.

Netanyahu’s monthly salary will fall by 1,882.35 shekels from a current 41,055.29 shekels ($10,527), (Sh812,000) while ministers’ salaries will fall 1,675.60 shekels from 36,920.29 (Sh728,933), the Finance Ministry said in a statement.

The move comes just days after parliament gave final approval to a controversial dual-year budget for 2009 and 2010 that included a number of tax increases aimed at offsetting higher spending so that fiscal targets can be met. (Reuters)
