In Summary

  • Ship will have new target detection and designation system for modern warfare

MOSCOW, Monday

The Russian Federation is developing a new destroyer that should replace ships of three classes: The destroyer, the major anti-submarine ship and the missile cruiser.

This will be a modern universal ship that will outstrip major anti-submarine ships since it will be equipped with advanced modern weapons.

The new destroyer will be equipped with universal shooting systems that can be loaded with various missiles, missile-torpedoes and new generation anti-missiles.

The Russian navy will receive 14-16 new destroyers, which will be the backbone of the floating fleet.

Naval analysts say, that there is an urgent need to develop such ships but a cautious approach should be shown when implementing such large-scale plans.

Owing to objective reasons, Russia has strongly lagged behind Nato countries in the past 20 years in developing destroyers.

The Russian navy needs such ships and especially anti-missile systems with which some American ships are equipped.

A source told Interfax-AVN agency: “Research is being done now to determine the image of a new offshore maritime zone vessel, and technical documents for the project are being drawn up. This process will last about 30 months.

“The destroyer will have a missile weapon system using universal vertical launchers to fire high-precision missiles at ground, surface, and underwater targets. The ship’s air defence will be provided by short, middle, and long-range anti-aircraft missiles,” the expert said. (Interfax)
