The head of the Anglican Church has urged Kenyans to have a peaceful referendum.

Archbishop Eliud Wabukala said in a statement on Thursday that divisions that now exist could have been avoided had the government heeded religious leaders’ calls to revise the draft constitution.

“This would have reduced the potential of conflict, but adversarial politicking has undermined this,” he said.

Right to life

The archbishop said that the ACK’s ‘No’ stance arose from clauses on the right to life, justice and equality of all religions, limitation of fundamental rights based on religion and supremacy of the constitution.

“The greatest right is the right to life. This right does not need to be qualified for the unborn simply because they can’t speak for themselves,” Archbishop Wabukala said.

He said that although the proposed constitution had a lot of good provisions, they were not enough. He once again called on the government to consider the issues raised by the Church and to soften its stance.
