The Avenue Group has invested in a new modern state-of-the-art hospital complex, fully equipped and well positioned to provide cutting-edge and affordable medical care to patients within Kenya and the East African region.

The newly built complex within Avenue Hospital, Parklands, has been designed and built in a way that ensures efficiency in nursing care and patient flow.

140 BEDS

The seven-floor expansive building is fully equipped to offer much needed tertiary care services— including dialysis, intensive care, advanced laboratory, physiotherapy  and specialised radiology such us CT scans and MRIs.

Additional facilities include state-of-the-art operating theatres, burns and isolation unit, medical, surgical, psychiatric, maternity and paediatric wards, as well as private rooms.

Officially opened on October 14, 2017, the complex has a bed capacity of 140.

For surgical cases, the new, ultra-modern facility has four theatres— including two modern, a modular and a lamina flow theatre.

“This is important in infection control by preventing airborne bacteria from getting into open wounds, as well as removing and reducing levels of bacteria on exposed surgical instruments, surgeons and the patient’s own skin,” says the Group Managing Director, Dr Denis Ogolla.

7 ICU BEDS

“Going forward, we will now be able to offer a wide range of surgeries. A separate theatre for caesarean sections has been provided within the maternity wing. This will come in to address emergency caesarean sections and still allow regular scheduled elective cases to continue uninterrupted,” he adds.

Besides, the new facility addresses another limiting factor that medical personnel previously faced within the hospital.

Without the space to accommodate advanced health care facilities, neurosurgeons, for instance, would be limited with regard to the complexity of procedures they could do because there was no intensive care support.

The new medical complex is fully equipped with a functional intensive care unit (ICU) fitted with seven ICU beds, including a private isolation/burns unit.

There is also a separate four-bed neonatal ICU, with provisions for expansion.

DIALYSIS

The Avenue Hospital renal unit, with a capacity to dialyse 11 patients concurrently, will change the lives of kidney patients in Kenya and the greater East African region.

Of these dialysis units, eight are in the general dialysis ward, while the other three will be utilised in the private dialysis rooms.

The dialysis units are timely.

Official data shows that about four million Kenyans have some form of kidney ailment, against a shortage of dialysis units in the country.

The wards at the new Avenue Hospital Nairobi complex are well designed.

Each floor has a central nursing station from where nurses can have a clear view of the wards and the flow of patients.

“This ensures that they are able to directly monitor the patients from one central location round the clock. Each nursing station is fitted with a centralised nurse call system, allowing patients to call for assistance if need arises. The monitoring system is able to electronically indicate the particular bed once a patient presses a button,” says Dr Caroline Gichuru, Avenue Group’s Chief Operating Officer.

HOMELY FEEL

Notably, the new facility makes Avenue Hospital Nairobi the first and only private hospital in the region with a fully fledged, private and secure psychiatric ward.

“We have enhanced our services and increased the capacity while ensuring that those in our care are comfortable,” says Dr Paul Wangai, the Head of Medical Quality.

The inside of the psychiatric ward has been aesthetically designed, while taking patient safety, security and comfort into consideration.

The environment gives patients a homely feel.

The facility will tap into the expertise of leading health specialists by according them admission privileges at Avenue Hospital.

These will include general surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, cardio-thoracic surgeons, neuro-surgeons, general physicians and psychiatrics, many of whom are already working with Avenue Hospital.

QUALIFIED STAFF

They will work closely with the hospital’s doctors, nurses and patient attendants to deliver high quality medical care, giving patients experiences that not only save lives, but that leave that memorable impact.

With all these facilities and services conglomerated in one centralised location, the new modern Avenue Hospital complex will extend the boundaries of quality medical care in the region.

It is in no doubt a worthy investment that will go a long way to change the experiences of patients and medical practitioners in East Africa.

Kenyans have for a long time been seeking advanced medical care overseas, especially in India, South Africa, United Kingdom and United States of America.

With specialised services and equipment coming closer home, access to quality health care is being addressed.

At Avenue Hospital, such access is being offered at reasonable prices.
