Tech firms launch detachable laptop that turns into phonepad

Three tech firms have collaborated to unveil a new 2-in-1 device than combines a phonepad and a laptop into the Kenyan market.

Tecno Mobile, Microsoft and Intel have launched the Tecno WinPad 10 with the aim of capturing the both the business and the entertainment markets in Kenya.

Techno head of product Dickson Ireri said the product comes with solutions capturing both convenience and productivity.

"The value here is that you get one device for two, a laptop when you need it and a phone pad whenever you want. Office and home entertainment is now combined in this device," Mr Ireri said.

The device will retail at Sh29,999 in the Safaricom retail outlets.

Techno follows the footsteps of other laptop manufacturers like Asus.

WINDOWS 10

Microsoft Country Manager Kunle Awosika said the product comes at a time when Microsoft is preparing to launch its next operating system, Windows 10 in July.

Intel General Manager Danie Steyn said the device responds well to the lifestyle demands of the youth who need both the entertainment and the productivity value of the product .

Global tablet market had recorded a rapid uptake followed by a decline last year due to its inability to do other functionalities done on Personal Computers (PCs).

Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Principal Secretary Joseph Tiampati said Kenya was keen to tap investments in the technology field to improve the local business environment.
