The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has invited bids for the development of a coal-fired power plant in Kitui.

In an ad on Wednesday, the ministry said the project will be developed under the Independent Power Producer (IPP) framework, which will see a developer enter into a power purchase agreement with Kenya Power.

“The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum now invites private investors with experience in coal fired power plants to express interest in developing the 900-1000MW power plant and sell power to KP under a contractual arrangement,” the tender notice read in part.

This comes close to two months after the ministry short-listed 10 companies to compete for development of a coal power plant in Lamu.

The plant is scheduled for completion by 2016 and will use coal from the Mui basin.
